5 Steps to Planning a Remodeling Project

5 Steps to Planning a Remodeling Project

The US home remodeling market size surpassed $340 billion in 2020, and half of the homeowners took on a renovation project throughout the year.

Although home renovation projects are surging in popularity, the remodeling process can be lengthy, stressful, and pricey. We’ve compiled a set of steps you can follow to keep everything in check.

Learn how you can make a schedule, find a St Petersburg general contractor, and finalize projects while staying stress-free and within budget.

1. Design and Planning

First, have an end goal in mind – a picture of the results you’re hoping to achieve. Then all you need to do is develop steps to reach it.

If you don’t have a clear vision, you can turn to social media or blogs to find inspiration for style, theme, and color.

You’ll also need to consider functionality and figure out what needs to be installed, scrapped, renovated, or remodeled.

2. Calculate Your Budget

Your upper limit should never be all the money you can afford to spend. Renovations can be more complicated than you think—work can take longer and be more expensive than you initially expected.

As a general rule, set aside 10 to 20% of your budget for unplanned costs. If your budget can’t match your vision, figure out which aspects are high versus low priority and what you can cut.

3. Hire a General Contractor

A helping hand is a huge relief, especially when you’ve got large remodeling projects. Before hiring contractors, always look beyond the price and check:

  • Whether they’re licensed to work in your area
  • If they’re insured
  • Their previous experience
  • Online customer reviews
  • The payment schedule

When you hire a contractor, ensure you can trust and communicate with them.

4. Work Out the Timeline

Now that you’ve decided who you’re going to work with and what you’re going to do, it’s time to determine when it will happen. Talk to your contractor to determine how long each job will take and estimate an endpoint.

Alternatively, if you want to be done by a certain date, you can figure out the tempo at which the team needs to work to meet the deadline.

Even when you account for holidays, shipping times, and acquiring permits, unexpected delays can still happen. So, don’t be surprised if a remodeling takes slightly longer than predicted.

5. Vacate the Area

You won’t be able to use any room where construction is ongoing. You need to consider how you’ll go about your life with limited or no access to that space.

For example, if you are renovating the kitchen, you’ll likely need to set up a different temporary space where you’ll cook and eat meals. You may even have to move houses while you’re remodeling.
